21 August 1952, Cannock, Staffordshire, England. Hughes left school at the age of 15 to follow his dream of becoming a musician. He began playing lead guitar with the News in 1967, where he also sang, emulating his heroes Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. Later he switched to bass guitar, inspired by James Jamerson from the Tamla/ Motown Records ‘house band’.
