Used People takes forever to get off the ground, then follows a predictable course. But in the end, like the vintage accordion that Joe teaches Swee' Pea to play, it squeezes some rich sentiments out of thin air. Full Review

Description by

"She got picked up at her own husband's funeral!" She is Pearl Berman, a not-so-inconsolable widow whose emotionally barren life and dysfunctional family get a joyous kick in the pants when a handsome Italian confesses that for 23 years he's loved her from afar. And now it's time for a closeup. As love turns Pearl luminescent, her disgruntled daughters and mother also discover that happiness is worth waiting for. Best Actress Academy Award-winners Shirley MacLaine, Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy and Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden join Italian film great Marcello Mastroianni as the talented people who make Used People a funny, tearful, all-star celebration of life and love.

Product Description:

Pearl Berman, a Jewish matriarch in Queens, unexpectedly discovers love and happiness on the day of her husband's funeral when a romantic Italian asks her on a date. Their perfect mismatch transforms not only Pearl, but her entire dysfunctional family.

Plot Synopsis:

Ethnic humor abounds in this comedy-drama set in Queens, circa 1969. The story concerns the difficult romance between the acerbic matriarch of a large, dysfunctional Jewish family and the sweet-natured Italian gentleman who woos her.
Reunited with Pearl Berman, the woman he has loved afar for 23 years, Joe Meledandri immediately begins campaigning for her heart -- no matter that their reunion occurs at the funeral of Pearl's husband. Oozing old-world European charm, Joe bursts like a ray of much-needed sunshine into the neurotic, unhappy Berman household as he attempts to break through the embittered housewife's crusty exterior.
