Product Description:

Gus (Matt Dillon) wants to invest in an old, dilapidated bowling alley with his Con Edison co-workers, but alimony payments to his ex-wife, Lee (Annabella Sciorra), make his dream unattainable. The only way that Gus can regain his financial stability is to stop paying alimony, which he can only do if Lee remarries. Gus starts a crusade to find Lee the perfect man with results that surprise everyone involved. British director Anthony Minghella's first American film also features William Hurt as Lee's married boyfriend and Mary-Louise Parker as Gus's love interest.

Plot Synopsis:

Con Ed worker Gus (Matt Dillon) hopes to partner with his co-workers and realize his dream of refurbishing his old neighborhood bowling alley. There's only one hitch in Gus's business venture: he doles out so much alimony to his ex-wife Lee (Annabella Sciorra)--a continuing education student dating her married English lit professor (William Hurt)--that it keeps him in a financial straitjacket. To relieve himself of the monetary burden and be able to invest in the bowling alley, Gus decides to marry Lee off. First, however, he has the onerous job of finding her "Mr. Right." Gus seeks potential mates for Lee at his job site, at traffic lights and anywhere else he can find them, resulting in a series of hopeless dates for his ex. In the matchmaking process, Gus realizes that Lee's perfect mate is closer than either of them ever suspected.

Production Notes:

  • Theatrical release: October 1993.
  • The film was shot on location in New York City.
  • MR. WONDERFUL was directed by Anthony Minghella, who also made the romantic comedy TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY. The film is the British director's first American production.
  • Screenwriter Vicki Polon scripted the semi-autobigraphical movie GIRLFRIENDS, and a second semi-autobiographical piece entitled HEARTS before writing MR. WONDERFUL. The film is loosely taken from her life; Polon told reporter Susan Shapiro that the script for MR. WONDERFUL draws on her father's attempt to marry off her mother in order to avoid paying alimony after their divorce.
