Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone).
Columbia/Legacy's JAZZ MOODS series compiles recordings by jazz artists according to a musical theme or feeling. The 'ROUND MIDNIGHT installments are intended to evoke the sense of a smoky, late-night jazz club, and saxophonist Dexter Gordon is a prime candidate for inclusion under this rubric. With his sensual, robust phrasing, which swings hard on up-tempo numbers and glides delicately through ballads, Gordon at times seems to epitomize the ethos of jazz. Passionate and sultry, adventurous but accessible, Gordon is a jazz lover's player.
'ROUND MIDNIGHT includes a lilting "As Time Goes By," Thelonious Monk's "Ruby, My Dear," and George Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On? (with a vocal from Lonette McKee). Interestingly, Gordon starred in a film entitled 'ROUND MIDNIGHT (for which he was nominated for an Oscar). Two tracks from that movie's soundtrack are featured here, including the aforementioned Gershwin tune, and "Body and Soul," on which Gordon lives up to the standard set by Coleman Hawkins with his famous version of the song. All of the recordings here were made between 1976 and 1985, after Gordon's return to the States from 14 years of living abroad. The quality of the performances reminds listeners why it was so good to have him back.
