Product Description:

The Bad Plus: Ethan Iverson (piano); Reid Anderson (bass instrument); David King (drums).
Chicago's jazz-rock-whatever band the Bad Plus continually experiment with the boundaries, meshing the dynamics and melodicism of rock with the improvisational freedom of jazz, without lapsing into an objectionably watered-down version of either, and side-stepping the "fusion" label. Their 2007 release, PROG, includes some charismatic originals, but as usual it's the covers that intrigue: a poignant version of David Bowie's "Life on Mars" and a wild take on Rush's "Tom Sawyer" showcase Ethan Iverson's expressive piano paying and David King's delirious drumming.

First - you gotta like jazz. This is a three piece acoustic band...piano, bass and drums.

Second - you gotta like rock and funky music (played by a three piece acoustic band).

I know - it sounds like an impossible combination, but on my first listen to this group, I liked them...a lot. They play their butts off and sound like they enjoy it immensely.

This isn't a Dave Brubeck trio (yes, he recorded with a trio - I have the album). This isn't Led Zeppelin either. But, on listening you can hear influences of those two groups and dozens of other...sometimes several in one tune. I've only heard the dic twice at this writing, so I can't name tunes and influences; it'll be more interesting for you to make your own observations.

If you like the idea of a three piece acoustic band wailing away on jazz pieces and breaking into some funky rock riffs in the middle of it all - give this a try.

All are top-notch musicians playing some very interestings parts. If there is another band like them, I haven't heard it yet.

I bought it - I like it. It'll be in my driving-my-car collection for a long time.
