...Filmed in gritty Bowery locales and exploring the causes of crime in convincing detail...
Filmed on location in the Bowery of New York before World War I, this silent feature is the first gangster movie about a hoodlum who is turned away from a life of crime by a beautiful social worker. Also includes a short called "The Police Force of New York City" filmed in 1910 and a newly recorded musical score, composed and performed by Philip Carli.
Filmed on location in the slums of the lower east side, "Regeneration" follows the story of a tough-as-nails orphan as he grows up alone on the unforgiving streets of New York City. Having spent his formative years running with a dangerous crowd of thugs and petty thieves, he becomes a prosperous, full-time criminal by the tender age of 25. But through the inspiration of Mamie Rose, the kind-hearted matron of a downtown mission, he eventually realizes that it's not too late for him to regain his lost innocence.
- REGENERATION was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000.
