1975's ANOTHER LIVE is a two-disc live set recorded by the first incarnation of Utopia, when the group was still billed as "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" and featured a six-member lineup with three keyboardists, Mark "Moogy" Klingman, Roger Schuskett, and new member Roger Powell, who quickly became Rundgren's primary musical foil. Powell's occasional trumpet solos add a fusion quality to the progressive-rock blend, recalling some of Miles Davis's early jazz-rock experiments.
The large lineup works better than you might expect, and surprisingly, the three keyboardists don't clutter the sound. Instead, ANOTHER LIVE is a tight, spacious-sounding recording featuring some impressive soloing in settings that never stray too far from Rundgren's pop roots, as on the lengthy "Another Life." Other highlights include a stomping cover of the Move's classic "Do Ya" and a surprisingly wonderful recasting of WEST SIDE STORY's "Something's Coming."
