Movies and Shakers
4 stars out of 5 -- Visually and thematically, ISLE OF DOGS is steeped in contemporary Japanese pop culture and futuristic iconography, but it also draws on traditional influences – not least in its witty allusions to Hokusai and other classic art.
It’s smart and different and sometimes deliberately odd and really funny -- rarely in a laugh-out-loud way, more in a smile-and-nod-I-get-the-joke kind of way.
The fact that a story aimed at the adult audience and with a disused animation technique is emerging as one of the essential productions of the year (inside and outside the animation cinema) is an infinitely valuable achievement. [Full Review in Spanish] Full Review
Rating: 9/10 -- Wes Anderson continues raising his personal bar on auteur level filmmaking and his animated dog movie is a classic. Full Review
ISLE OF DOGS is really a film about its own enthusiasms: for four-legged fleabags of all shapes and sizes, of course, but also for the culture and cinema of Japan, which is woven with typical fastidiousness into Anderson’s magpie aesthetic.
Rating: 4/5 -- It works, in a way only Wes Anderson can make such things work. Full Review
ABC Radio (Australia)
In this stop-motion-animated film from writer/director Wes Anderson, an outbreak of canine flu in Japan leads all dogs to be quarantined on an island. A boy (voice of Koyu Rankin) journeys there to rescue his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), and gets help from a pack of misfit canines who have also been exiled. His quest inspires a group of dog lovers to expose a government conspiracy. The voice cast also includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban, Greta Gerwig, and Yoko Ono.
