3 Stars - Good - "...Being tipped as the 'Next Big Thing' by Pearl Jam could be the kiss of death to a new-ish band...Tribe After Tribe have the wherewithal to live up to the hype...songs like the haunting 'Babalon' and the glorious 'Face Of The Sun' prove the band's pedigree..."

Product Description:

Tribe After Tribe: Robbi Robb (vocals, guitar), Robby Whitelaw (bass, vocals), Chris Frazier (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Shaluza Gumboot Dancers (vocals, gumboots), Shlomo Pelco (drums), P.K. (drums, percussion), Barry C. Schneider (industrial African percussion), Lianne Jedeikin, Sue Dall, Margory Graue, Beverly Sontz, Reverend Dave (background vocals).
All songs written by Robbi Robb except "Ice Below" (Robbi Robb/Barry Schneider), "Dance Of The Wu Li Masters" (Robbi Robb/Chris Frazier) and "World Of Promise" (Robbi Robb/Bruce Williams).
The second album for the Los Angeles-via-South Africa trio Tribe After Tribe is not much of a departure from their debut. A bit more self-assured and mature, perhaps, but still the same alluring blend of African influences and '90s grunge rock. Not that this is a bad thing. The music is hypnotic and heartfelt as on the tribal rhythm of "Ice Below." The choir-like intro to "The Spell" doesn't really work, but most everything else does (like the blues colorings of the same song). "Dance of the Wu Li Masters" has a percolating, percussive groove, although the grinding guitars threaten to overwhelm it at moments. The rest of the album is a fine mix of moody ballads ("Congo Sky," "In the Face of the Sun") and churning guitar rock ("World of Promise," "Delight"), closing with the arresting song suite "The Lovers." ~ Tom Demalon
