The camera too often records and predicts what a lascivious man would want to see rather than an aesthetic observer. Full Review

Robert Towne's Personal Best is a flashy, hip and quite fascinating investigation into the arduous process of working out sexual identity in today's narcissistic society and culture. Full Review

Producer-director-screenwriter Robert Towne has fallen dismally short of his own personal best. Full Review

Towne has a love of slow motion that's employed as if he's afraid you might miss one, rippling muscle. Worse than that, when people aren't exercising, they are often talking about exercising. Full Review

Description by

This directorial debut of Chinatown Oscar-winner Robert Towne is a bracing celebration of athletes who live the way they play: with total passion. Mariel Hemingway plays a promising hurdler who finds needed emotional and athletic seasoning with a caring mentor (Patrice Donnelly). After the two fall in love, their relationship is threatened as both vie for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
