Rating: 2.5/4 -- Even at under an hour, this children's fantasy is sluggishly paced by today's standards...but it does have its charms and a relevant social message at its core.

Rating: 2/4 -- Directed with a certain crudity but retaining an innocence that worked out nicely. Full Review

...The pilot for the '50s TV series, with stars George Reeves and Phyllis Coates in full blossom...
USA Today
Apr 9, 1999

Product Description:

Superman's first full-length film stars George Reeves as the title character and Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane, roles both actors performed on the TV series of the 50's. Superman must save a small western town from an invasion of radioactive Mole Men making their way to the center of the Earth through an oil shaft.

Plot Synopsis:

The Man of Steel made his first leap from the boob tube to the big screen in this celluloid adventure.
Bespectacled newsman Clark Kent arrives in a small Midwestern town to do a story on an unusually deep oil well. Soon he discovers that the hole leads to a subterranean realm inhabited by a race of radioactive misfits.
Though these creatures pose their own threat, Clark -- and his caped alter ego -- must also contend with an angry mob of local yokels...

Production Notes:

  • Actor George Reeves also played Superman in the original television series. Tragically, he committed suicide after the program ended.
Some conspiracy enthusiasts find his death to be part of a larger phenomenon. This so-called "Superman Curse," believers claim, also explains the crippling accident of the 1970-80's "Superman," Christopher Reeve, as well as the mental breakdown of the 1970-80's "Lois Lane," Margot Kidder -- among other ill-fated incidents.
  • A Lippert release.
