The picture is a bit too long and its sombre tone may irritate those customers who insist on ridiculing all old movies, but its rich sense of period and atmosphere and Cagney's superb performance make it an item worth seeing. Full Review

If you can suspend your disbelief, the lousy make-up doesn't detract from how beautiful, moving and loving a tribute to Chaney's legacy the film is. Full Review

[T]his treatment of silent film's man-of-mystery Lon Chaney is more honest than most, and in the second half it offers an interesting glimpse of the Universal backlot in the 1920s.

'Man of a thousand faces' draws the figure of a myth, showing that you can get to the true essence of something, or someone, without being true to facts. [Full review in Spanish] Full Review

Product Description:

The story of the legendary film star Lon chaney. Born to deaf and dumb parents, his upbringing is thought to have contributed to his expressive gift of mime. Although successful he was a recluse, earning him the reputation of "The Man of Mystery." Traces his life through his marriages, his trials with his parents and infant son, and recreates many of his famous roles. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Original) Story and Screeplay.

Plot Synopsis:

Silent film legend Lon Chaney's life comes to the screen as a tearjerker in which another screen veteran, James Cagney, plays the title role.
From the very beginning, as the son of deaf parents, Chaney learned to respect others' differences. He also learned early on that he had a talent for performing, and his gifts took him from the vaudeville stage to the silver screen... and stardom.
Despite his triumphs, Chaney suffered several setbacks. He languished as a movie extra for years, weathered two stormy marriages, and in the end, became a bitter man.
