Entertainment Reviews:

Entertainment Weekly - 12/20/2013
"It's a film of jaw-dropping virtuosity and pleasure, one that leaves you revved, enthralled, tickled, moved, and amazed." -- Grade: A
Wall Street Journal - 12/12/2013
"[S]ensationally fresh and funny in different ways....Every one of these characters bears watching..."
Los Angeles Times - 12/12/2013
"[The] dizzying, outlandishly entertaining AMERICAN HUSTLE is a 21-first century screwball farce about 20th-century con men....A film that is big hearted and off the wall in equal measure."
New York Times - 12/12/2013
"AMERICAN HUSTLE giddily embraces the excesses of its era, from spandex to 'staches, though it's a farce that speaks as well to this tarnished age."
USA Today - 12/14/2013
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Every once in a while, a movie will come along that makes you sit up excitedly in your seat, eagerly anticipating its every move. American Hustle is just such a movie."
Variety - 12/05/2013
"[A] human comedy writ large, ringing a series of screwball variations on themes of duplicity and paranoia against a dazzling '70s backdrop."
Rolling Stone - 12/12/2013
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "You watch the explosively entertaining, dramatically gripping American Hustle on a cinematic high."
Hollywood Reporter - 12/04/2013
"[O]utrageously entertaining....[A] twisty con-job chronicle that combines heightened dramatic stakes with playful humor, subversive sexiness and fabulous 1970s style."
Chicago Sun-Times - 12/13/2013
"[P]erfectly executed...wall-to-wall fun...filled with the joy of expert filmmaking on every level..."
Total Film - 12/06/2013
4 stars out of 5 -- "With the entire cast on their A-game, depths are found in characters that could've easily been caricatures. Adams vamps it up, but retains a below-the-surface vulnerability."
A.V. Club - 12/12/2013
"AMERICAN HUSTLE turns out to be a freewheeling party of a movie, one that never stops adding complications and wrinkles and hungry new players to the mix." -- Grade: A- - 12/13/2013
4 stars out of 4 -- "[A] '70s crime romp that's ridiculously entertaining in all the best ways."
Empire - 12/14/2013
4 stars out of 5 -- "An extremely entertaining, brilliantly acted, highly diverting film..."

Film Comment - 12/09/2013
"AMERICAN HUSTLE reaches for something timeless. It's a portrait of palm-greasing and flimflamming as the very lingua franca of American life, a movie about the lies we tell -- not least to ourselves -- just to get through the day."
Uncut - 01/17/2014
"[T]he two best performances come from Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence....[Adams] is terrifically mischievous, with a sociopathic glint in her eye..."

Russell's fictional period crime drama about a reckless FBI agent who recruits a con man and his alluring partner into a scheme to ensnare corrupt politicians and gangsters. Smooth-talking Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) is a hustler of the highest order. No mark is off limits for Rosenfeld, especially when his crafty partner Sydney Prosser (Adams) is by his side. When renegade FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper) thrusts the deceptive duo into the treacherous world of New Jersey power players and underworld heavies, the thrill of the hunt grows too strong to resist. Meanwhile, New Jersey politician Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) gets caught in the middle, and Rosenfeld's capricious wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) holds more power than anyone could imagine.
