Description by

The Drifters were one of the hottest, most original, and sophisticated groups in the history of R&B. The group weathered many personnel changes. When they recorded for Atlantic in their first incarnation in the early '50s, the lead vocals were wonderfully sung by the great Clyde McPhatter.

Product Description:

Includes liner notes by Marv Goldberg.
Two great albums by the gospel-influenced group that gave the fledgling Atlantic Records some of its first hits. These Drifters, of course, are not to be confused with the quartet of the same name, also on Atlantic, who were led by (among others) Ben E. King, and who ruled the charts between 1959 and 1964.
The Drifters heard here were conceived as a vehicle for frontman Clyde McPhatter, whose instantly recognizable high tenor was one of the greatest vocal sounds in early R&B and rock & roll. Most of McPhatter's group's hits--including the good rocking "Money Honey," the original "Ruby Baby," and the group's classic R&B version of "White Christmas"--are included here. For the rest of the story, fans should check out Atlantic's excellent two-disc Drifters anthologies LET THE BOOGIE WOOGIE ROLL: GREAT HITS 1953-1958.
