[W]ithin the first minute or so, we forget it’s Oldman and we marvel at one of the most authentic and memorable portrayals of Churchill in the long, the very long history of television series and movies about arguably England’s most important 20th century figure.

About 10 minutes into DARKEST HOUR, you forget Gary Oldman’s playing Winston Churchill in a gripping World War II drama. Gone is the vaunted British actor -- all that’s left is the stocky frame, large jowls and signature cigar of a political force of nature.

McCarten’s scene writing is tart and efficient, and Wright infuses the drama with unquestioned energy.

Rating: 3/4 -- The most basic form of Oscar bait, but Wright has a knack for visualizing the seemingly un-cinematic, and he creates a compelling film out of the backroom deals and Parliamentary finagling. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Casting Gary Oldman as Churchill seems like a risky gamble, given that both are known commodities. But Oldman, who has already portrayed such disparate figures as Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald and Ludwig van Beethoven, proves to be up to the task. Full Review
