Description by

Boris Karloff stars as James Lee Wong in this thoughtful, action-packed mystery. The film gets off to a shocking start when Chinese Princess Lin Hwa (Lotus Long) makes an urgent visit to Wong's home where she is suddenly killed by a poisonous dart. Wong, together with hard-boiled Captain Street (Grant Withers) and ace reporter "Bobbie" Logan (Marjorie Reynolds) piece together a mysterious puzzle that involves airplane smuggling and international intrigue. Mr. Wong in Chinatown was the third in a successful string of Monogram features that began in 1938 with Mr. Wong, Detective and continued with The Mystery of Mr. Wong (1939), The Fatal Hour (1940), Doomed to Die (1940) and Phantom of Chinatown, with Keye Luke as Mr. Wong (1940).

Product Description:

Based on the sleuth created by Hugh Wiley for Collier's Magazine. This third installment in the series finds a damsel in distress done in by a poison dart while seeking the detective's help. She turns out to be a princess and only the first in a series of baffling murders.

Mr. Wong in Chinatown Movie Lover: from Jacksonville, FL US -- June, 15, 2003

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It is alittle on the talky side, but it's still an enjoyable mystery.

As essayed by Boris Karloff, Mr. Wong is that true rarity of movie Asian characters. He is not in the least bit a racist sterotype. He is smart, well educated, very well-spoken, and someone the police rely on quite a bit.

As is the case with every Alpha Video release that I have purchased thus far, the quality of the source material is very good, although there are a few minor film scratches. Overall, a very good transfer. The only negative is the total lack of extra features. But then, it's a steal at it's suggested retail price.

I plan on adding the rest of the films in this series to my collection.
