Rating: C+ -- At best, it only resembles Conrad's 1900 novel. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- A great O'Toole performance can't quite save this ponderous film.

Pretentious, complex and overlong, O'Toole's one note performance is irritating and too earnest. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- Something bewildering has happened in Richard Brooks's making of it, and it misses at being either Conrad or sheer entertainment cinema. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Richard Brooks, one of America's most influential and successful directors, teamed up with Peter O'Toole, James Mason, and Jack Hawkins for this ambitious adaptation of Joseph Conrad's high-seas adventure, Lord Jim. The story of an idealistic Merchant Marine officer who disgraces himself when he abandons his ship, Conrad's classic tale of cowardice and redemption was a stark departure for Brooks. Better known for the contemporary realism of such seminal hits as The Blackboard Jungle, Elmer Gantry and In Cold Blood, Brooks was eager to tackle Lord Jim's epic themes. The casting of Peter O'Toole, a top box-office star, paved the way for the high-budget production to begin. Aided by an outstanding supporting cast, which includes Curt Jurgens and Eli Wallach, Brooks and his stars faithfully captured all the action, drama and depth of Conrad's unforgettable adventure.

Product Description:

This faithful adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 1900 novel tells the story of a romantic young Englishman, Jim (Peter O'Toole), who takes to the sea on a merchant vessel in his quest for adventure. Imagining himself to be a great man with a bright future, Jim instead deserts at the first true test of his mettle--in a torrential storm that threatens the ship and the lives of its passengers. Wracked with guilt and shame over his cowardly act, Jim travels the world in search of an opportunity to prove his worth and retrieve his lost honor. He finds such an opportunity in the jungles of Southeast Asia, where he leads the oppressed natives in a revolt against the tyrannical general who rules over them. Peter O'Toole is charming as the well-mannered and honorable Englisman who is haunted by his past mistakes. Surrounded by lush beauty and the captivating spirit of the islanders, he rediscovers his courage and honor and ultimately finds redemption. Filmed on location in Cambodia and Hong Kong, this epic resonates with the power of its exotic and gorgeous settings, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere.

Plot Synopsis:

LORD JIM is based on Joseph Conrad's 1900 novel about an adventurous 19th-century Englishman who sets out to prove himself in the jungles and islands of the Far East. Full of romantic visions of life at sea, he joins up with a merchant vessle and fails his first test of bravery, deserting the ship in a terrifying storm. Jim is wracked with guilt and anguish until he has the chance to regain his honor by leading a native rebellion against a cruel general on a small East Asian island.
