...So decent and entertaining....A lot of the success...has to do with the performance by writer-actor Benson...

Rating: 3.5/5 -- It also has some very good sequences that are not at all expected, including the smashing basketball game that concludes the film.

Rating: 3/4 -- The movie's concocted out of story ingredients as old as the hills... but it's acted with such grace and good humor that we really care about what happens. Full Review

Description by

Henry Steele (Robby Benson) is a small-town high school basketball whiz. Recruited by a big-time college team, he's given a four-year, no-cut scholarship, an allowance and a pretty tutor (Annette O'Toole). And he's still not prepared for the bitter, sometimes brutal experiences he will face in the fast lane of collegiate hoops.

One on One is family entertainment that consistently scores. Coming off his big-screen splash in Ode to Billy Joe, Benson transformed his love of basketball into a screenplay (co-authored with his father) full of truth and heart reminiscent of Rocky and Hoosiers. Under veteran director Lamont Johnson, he, O'Toole and G.D. Spradlin as Henry's ruthless coach give performances that hit the mark. Your spirits will soar with this story of a winner.

Product Description:

Benson plays a high school basketball player who gets a shot at big-time college athletics. However, he finds that he must make difficult decisions when he is confronted with corruption and cheating.

Plot Synopsis:

This film offers insight into the politics of college basketball, and how wide-eyed freshman Henry Steele loses his innocence about the game, and his school.
When Steele, a gifted player, doesn't fulfill his mercilessly cruel coach's expectations, he's in big trouble. Specifically, the university wants him to renounce his scholarship. But Henry does not give up so easily. Instead he fights the system -- and keeps on improving his game -- in an effort to stay on the team, and keep his well-earned stipend. Will Steele succeed in redeeming himself'
