Rating: 5/5 -- Superbly shot in high-contrast monochrome, it unfolds in a stylised universe where character is defined by actions and costumes rather than words. Full Review
Rating: 4/5 -- It's a moody, ruminative lowlife crime drama winding up with as many corpses on the floor as Hamlet, and pungent with the sweaty maleness of Melville's tough-guy pictures. Full Review

This complex thriller follows the fatalistic relationship between two men: Maurice, a crook just out of prison and Silien (Belmondo), who may or may not be a Doulos (a kind of high-class informer). Maurice, wasting no time, immediately begins to put himself on the wrong side of the law, setting up a number of robberies with the help of Silien, whom he begins to suspect is a police informer. A spellbinding New Wave noir from director Jean-Pierre Melville (LE SAMOURAI).
