[T]he set pieces are staged with a style and self-consciousness all Melville's own.

Melville's storytelling never suffers from philosophical meandering. The precision with which he films robberies and escapes marks him as one of the most lucid and gifted directors of physical action...

Rating: 5/5 -- Superbly shot in high-contrast monochrome, it unfolds in a stylised universe where character is defined by actions and costumes rather than words. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- It's a moody, ruminative lowlife crime drama winding up with as many corpses on the floor as Hamlet, and pungent with the sweaty maleness of Melville's tough-guy pictures. Full Review

Product Description:

This complex thriller follows the fatalistic relationship between two men: Maurice, a crook just out of prison and Silien (Belmondo), who may or may not be a Doulos (a kind of high-class informer). Maurice, wasting no time, immediately begins to put himself on the wrong side of the law, setting up a number of robberies with the help of Silien, whom he begins to suspect is a police informer. A spellbinding New Wave noir from director Jean-Pierre Melville (LE SAMOURAI).
