Juliet should be a girl, but the story's trajectory of self-sacrifice requires her to become a woman. Steinfeld gets the girl part exactly right, but she botches the transformation. Full Review

The grown-ups outshine the kids in this handsome, romantically anemic rendering of Shakespeare's perennial. Full Review

There isn't an interesting new point of view here (unless it's that violence is bad and sometimes after a tragedy, you just have to mend fences and move on -- but that's hardly a new idea, and the story isn't meant to be beat-you-over-the-head didactic). Full Review

The fact that this "love" is really little more than lust and rebellion is ignored by everyone involved - though at least the lust waits until marriage to be consummated. Full Review

Rating: C- -- What can you say about a Romeo and Juliet that lacks heat, romance, eroticism, or lyricism? Mercifully, not much. Full Review

Rating: 1/5 -- This Romeo and Juliet is set on its disappointing course, and it can't be deterred. What a bummer. Full Review

Carlo Carlei's adap adopts a traditional, unfussy approach, with characters garbed in puffy-sleeved medieval finery, sauntering around gorgeous Italian locations and spouting the Bard's extravagant dialogue in easy-to-follow soundbites...

Product Description:

William Shakespeare's timeless tale of love and tragedy gets a 21st century makeover in this update starring Douglas Booth as Romeo, and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet. Directed by Carlo Carlei (THE FLIGHT OF THE INNOCENT) and adapted by Julian Fellowes, ROMEO & JULIET finds the innocent young lovers caught up in a bitter feud between their warring families, the Montagues and Capulets. Determined not to let the sins of their families' turbulent pasts stand in the path of true love, Romeo and Juliet run away to wed in secrecy. Alas, happiness was not to come, for in time the flames of their youthful passion will consume them both. Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Stellan Skarsgard co-star.
