Rating: B- -- Creaky old dark house thriller about a woman in peril. Full Review
Ozus' World Movie Reviews
Rating: B- -- The plot of this noir melodrama, about family intrigues and insanity set within an ominous house a la Rebecca, is senseless, but potboiler is elevated by actors Stanwyck and Flynn and Franz Waxman's delicious score. Full Review
Despite percussive bangs, shaky camera, heavy breathing and shadowy lighting, there are not many scares and some plot points are plain silly. Full Review
Description by OLDIES.com:
A sudden death. Cries in the night. A locked laboratory in a windswept mansion. It's hard to say what creates more tension in Cry Wolf, the nerve-tingling atmosphere (enhanced by Franz Waxman's edgy score) or the flashfire romantic chemistry between movie immortals Barbara Stanwyck and Errol Flynn in their only screen pairing. Stanwyck plays Sandra, a recent widow who visits her husband's family for the first time and finds herself drawn to a man she knows she should fear: her husband's remote, controlling uncle (Flynn). He seems to know secrets about the eerie cries, the laboratory and why his nephew was buried in a closed coffin. Can Sandra uncover the truth before a second death occurs?
After Sandra Marshall's secret wedding, her young husband suddenly dies mysteriously. Without disclosing her identity to his family, Sandra attends the wake to take stock of her spouse's relatives. The young widow is disturbed by what she sees, and becomes convinced that her husband's uncle, Mark Caldwell, has somehow contributed to the young man's demise. Sandra gradually learns more, realizing that Mark could not have committed a murder. However, not all is right with the Caldwell family and she means to discover what it is. Film debut for actress Geraldine Brooks.
