Originally composed for a performance art piece, the avant-folk duo Faun Fables' THE TRANSIT RIDER is a theatrical song cycle centered on the idea of becoming lost in an ever-more confusing network of tunnels and trains. Inspired by singer, songwriter, and performance artist Dawn McCarthy's first exposure to the New York subway system, the songs are by turns jazzy, surreal, and folk-influenced, exploring various eccentric characters who appear on the protagonist's travels, and also including the traditional folk ballad "The House Carpenter" and "I No Longer Wish," a poem written by McCarthy's father.
